Biography of Dr. Richard Wirtanen
My father, like many people I have
met as patients, was a war refugee. He moved from
Finland, during the Finnish-Russian war in 1939, to Canada
where he met my mother.
I was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada and lived there until I was eight years old. My family moved to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan until I graduated from high school.
Since then, I have lived all over
the United States and spent 7 years in Europe while in the
military.
For the next 20 years, I never lived
anywhere for more than 3 years.
After this assignment, I worked at
the Pentagon, lived under Mt. Etna in Sicily for a year
while I directed the movement of nuclear cruise missiles,
and then I went on to Stuttgart, Germany where I became a
liaison for US Forces in Europe to NATO. Shortly
afterwards, I was assigned responsibilities for computer
logistics in Europe. At that time, Desert Storm/Desert
Shield took up a good portion of my life. As a result of
my work, I was selected, along with Al Gore, as one of the
top 100 computer experts in the Department of Defense in
1992.
My last Air Force assignment was at
Hill A.F.B. in Utah where I worked at the Defense
Megacenter Ogden, Utah managing the funding and personnel
at the center. However, a sequence of events led me to
another direction in my life.... “Chiropractic”.
On 4 March 1993, I was involved in
my second major accident within a year. I was recovering
from a bad skiing accident in Austria in 1992, when
someone who was going 60 mph hit me from behind. I was
sitting in traffic light watching the whole thing happen,
not being able to do a thing until I was hit. My Volvo
station wagon was totaled, and so, I thought, I was
too. However, like most of us, I minimized what had
happened and refused treatment by the ambulance service.
This is why I know so much about what happens when you get
in a car accident.
The next day, I could not lift my
head off of my pillow. I stayed in bed for over a week
and was unable to perform even the simplest task. I
eventually made it to the emergency room. The doctor
there gave me some pain killers and told me to see a
chiropractor.. and I did. After two months of
chiropractic treatment, I was in better health than I was
before my accident.
I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel,
went to school at the age of 46 and now I help other
people that went through the same illnesses and pain that
I suffered from for years.
I started practice full time in
March 2000.
Each session is tailored to your
needs or intent." I invite you to my office to see what
holistic healing is all about. My patients are not just
numbers, but people that share a common bond with me...
that is they want to change and heal naturally, without
surgery or drugs.
