Digestive Disorders

Digestive disorders are very common, but we usually don't hear much about it because of the embarrassment associated with certain conditions. When someone has constipation, diarrhea, colitis or irritable bowel syndrome, they are not as likely to talk about it at a party the same way they would talk about their headaches or back pain. The fact remains that intestinal or other digestive disorders are the cause of silent suffering for many people who do not know where they can turn to get proper treatment.

Before reading further, learn more about the nervous system and how it affects the function of the body. (LINK TO SUBLUXATION) This will give you a better understanding about the following content and why chiropractic works so well.

It is important to recognize that that intestinal system is just like every other system or organ in the body. It is intimately controlled by the nervous system.

The intestinal tract is a tube that is lined on the outside with a thin layer of muscle and on the inside with special cells with important functions. The outer muscle layer is responsible for moving food along the tract similar to the way you squeeze toothpaste from a tube. One area is contracted, while another is relaxed so that the food can slowly inch along to be digested and absorbed.

The inside layer of the intestinal tract is lined with special cells that are responsible for releasing digestive enzymes and mucous. Other cells are responsible for absorbing nutrients and transporting them into the blood stream.

All of the functions of the intestinal tract are finely balanced so that when we eat, the food is properly broken down, absorbed into the body (this is termed DIGESTION) and the waste is expelled. The muscles contract at the right time and strength so the food doesn't pass through too fast, too slow or bunch up in the middle. Exact amounts of enzymes are released depending on the amount of food we eat. Mucous is released so that the enzymes don't damage the intestinal wall. The cells that absorb food and water must function correctly for our body to get what it needs to grow and stay healthy. All of these functions are controlled by the nervous system…the nervous system tells the muscles when to contract and how hard…it tells the cells how much enzyme or mucous to release…it tells the other cells to absorb water and nutrients when they are supposed to.

As you can see, the intestinal system is extremely complicated and any lack of control from the nervous system can result in a number of symptoms. If the muscles don't work properly, we get constipation. If the muscles work too fast, we can get diarrhea and cramping. If too much enzyme and mucous is released, we may get irritable bowel syndrome or colitis. If the cells responsible for absorbing nutrients are not functioning, we become undernourished and feel tired and weak all the time. The bottom line here is that your brain-body connection has been disrupted and that is what chiropractic care can help you with.  Here is a short list of digestive disorders that can affect you:

Constipation Intestinal muscles under-functional
Cramping Intestinal muscles over-functional
Colitis / Irritable Bowel Syndrome Intestinal lining irritated
Diarrhea Mucous cells overactive or absorption problem
Gas and Bloating Improper food digestion or enzyme activity
Gastric Reflux / Heartburn Dysfunction of the esophagus

Many of these symptoms can be quite unpleasant and we want to make them go away as quickly as possible. When we turn to medication to make the symptoms go away, we may become disappointed when the symptoms continually come back after we stop taking the medication or the medication stops working after a while. The laxatives, anti-inflamatories or other medications have side effects and may even make us feel worse than we did before we started taking them. It may come to a point when we are told there is nothing more we can do and we will just have to live with the problem, relying on the medications to get us through the day.

Read the information provided on subluxations and you will realize that symptoms are the body's alarm system and by turning off the alarm, we are not taking care of the real problem and may even be making it worse over time. Many people find that when they are treated with a chiropractic adjustment, their symptoms disappear. This is not a difficult concept when we understand that the nervous system controls every function in the body and if the nervous system is not working at its best, then things begin to go wrong and show up as symptoms. Your chiropractor does not treat your symptoms. He or she will locate and correct your subluxations to allow your nervous system to function at 100%. When your nervous system is functioning at its best, the rest of your body will then be able to do what it is supposed to do in a healthy manner.
